CV Distribution

How to Distribute Your CV

Job Boards

A job board is a website where recruiters and jobseekers can meet. Recruiters upload job adverts for job seekers to search and job seekers upload their CV for recruiters to search. You can use your word document or rich text document to upload your CV to a number of different jobs boards such as Careers and Jobs UK.

CV Posting

If you're looking to distribute your CV to a number of job boards you might look to load your CV to a CV posting site. A CV posting site is designed to push your CV to a number of job boards and get you included in all searches that are made via those job boards. This can save some time, however not all job boards accept CVs from CV Posting Sites so you may need to check that you are on the job sites you want to be on.

Recruitment Agencies

Recruitment agencies will want to get a deep understanding of your capabilities from your CV and match them to their clients' needs. For this reason your CV has been carefully constructed to provide these agents with a comprehensive and concise snapshot of your capabilities. It is best to supply your CV in a word document as they will want to strip out contact information when passing your CV onto their client. The word format allows them to do this more easily as most recruiters will have Microsoft Word on their PC.
Try and arrange a number of meetings or phone calls with a variety of recruitment agents so you can expand on your CV in more detail and get them actively thinking about you and jobs that you would be suitable for.

Responding to a Job Advert

If you're responding to a direct employer's job advert be sure to follow the instruction provided. If the employer requests that you apply by post then print off your CV, if available a PDF format is most likely to maintain the right format. A PDF format is also best for email applications as it will maintain the correct formatting. Word documents can experience format changes dependent on which version of Microsoft Word an employer has and the settings they have set-up.
Ensure that you provide a covering letter or email that:
  • Shows interest
  • Links your CV to the job vacancy
  • Explains why you want the job
  • Complements the CV and doesn't repeat it
  • Is concise
  • Is typed (this applies to covering letters) unless the employer asks for a hand written letter
